THE HISTORY OF THE CITY

Nafplio named after Nafplios, son of Poseidon and Amymon. During the Mycenaean period the city was one of the most powerful seaport cities – states of Greece. In the Medieval Times, Nafplio was occupied by the Venetians, who made it an important naval spot in the Peloponnese. The Venetians constructed Palamidi Fortress above the town to protect it from enemies. Castle of Bourtzi, a small islet at the port  was also built  by Venetians . In the 16th century and after many sieges, the town was conquered by the Ottomans. Nafplio was among the first towns to be set free at the Greek War of 1821. After the end of the war, Nafplio was the port where the first governor of the Greek State arrived, Ioannis Kapodistrias, making the town the first capital of Greece.

How to get there

Nafplio is 144 km from Athens. It is easily accessible for long or short day trips even for one-day excursions. You can reach Nafplio by car, driving the Athens – Tripoli highway, or by bus as there are regular routes to and from Athens every day.

Gastronomic Delights

In Nafplio, you can choose between to lots of different selected local items ranging from orange juice to wine and from local cheeses, olive oil and premium local honey to pastries and rich meat dishes. We recommend you to taste Bogana (milk lamb with potatoes, cooked in an earthen pot in a traditional oven for many hours) and Gogkes (traditional, handmade pasta with grated cheese).

Mycenae

Mycenae is one of the most important archaeological sites of Peloponnese and is situated upon a small hill-top on the road leading from the Argolic Gulf to the north. In the period 1600 – 1100 BC it was at its absolute peak giving its name to a civilization which spread throughout the Greek world.. Excavations began in 1874-1876 by Henry Schliemann, but they still continue to this day. In the archaeological site of Mycenae you can admire the main gate or “Lion’s Gate”, Tholos Tombs and the Archaeological Museum.

Epidaurus

The Ancient Theater of Epidaurus is a living ancient theatre, a one-of-a-kind archaeological site, located on the northeastern side of Peloponnese. Gradually, sports and art competitions, as well as drama competitions took place there. Nowadays the theater hosts a Greek Festival of ancient Greek dramas, which takes place every year. The Theatre of Epidaurus has a 20-meter wide circular orchestra, 55 rows and a seating capacity of up to 14,000 people.

Argos is just 11 km from Nafplio and it is considered to be the oldest town of Continental Europe and one of the most ancient towns in Greece. Argos has many archaeological sites, such as the Ancient Theater, Ancient Agora and Larissa Castle with the magnificent view of the city. The Church of Saint Peter, the city’s saint patron, is located in the main square surrounded by lots of shops and trendy cafes.
